Water shortages Water shortages

Water shortages are projected to increase by 2050 as water supplies stored in glaciers and snowpack decline. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Fourth Assessment), more than 1/6th of the world’s population lives in regions supplied by melt water from major mountain ranges.

In already wet, tropical areas the average river runoff and water shortages are projected to increase by 10%-40% at high altitudes. Likewise, in dry mid-latitude regions and dry tropics, the water availability is projected to decrease by 10%-30%. These numbers indicate that on our present course wet regions will be flooded while dry regions grow drier.

The small islands of the Pacific Ocean and in the Caribbean will also be dramatically affected by water shortages by mid-century. Climate change is projected to affect already low rainfall in these areas – where water resources will not be sufficient to meet the demand.
